Africa Investment: Twitter Spaces & Zoom

There is a Twitter Space today about accelerating investment in African Entrepreneurs from Namibia 🇳🇦. This is being promoted/supported by @google, @statedept, Prosper Africa & FlutterWave. This one starts at 10:30 AM & should end at noon. I will be attending this meeting.

There is also a Zoom call regarding investment in Ghana 🇬🇭. That one starts at 4 AM EST (so I will not be able to attend), but I am putting it out there just in case others want to join in (I wish I could, but I will be working then).

my name is yeliza, i’m ukrainian, living in kyiv. funny story but currently we have a 150k+ army of russians all over the ukrainian borders, as well as an ongoing shelling from uncontrolled territories that has been averaging more than 1000 strikes daily. more fun facts – we are currently in a state of emergency, and it’s of high probability that russians will start a major invasion pretty damn soon. kyiv will be one of the first to be hit 🙂

That there is some good in this world, Mr. Frodo & it’s worth fighting for.

With everything happening in Ukraine 🇺🇦 right now & Russia 🇷🇺 threatening nuclear retaliation against anyone attempting to defend the freedoms of a peace-loving people, some folks are already trying to appease the whims of an authoritarian with the nostalgia of the past.

To quote John Stuart Mill:

Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on & do nothing.

Instead of doing nothing or looking the other way, we need to confront the evil in front of us & do whatever we can (however small) to support those who love liberty over tyranny.

I am not sure what I can do yet—but I will do something to support Ukraine 🇺🇦 in their fight for freedom.

Belated Sigh: Afro-Emojis Rejected

So The @Unicode Consortium has rejected two out of three Afro-emojis submitted by folks, with the third stuck in limbo under “pending.”

The Afro hair emoji was rejected, although I wonder if it’s because there is something similar in emoji land: 👨🏾‍🦱👩🏾‍🦱

Also, the Aboriginal Flag was rejected, but that is not surprising as Unicode has stricter protocols for flags than regular emojis.

Next up, the Jollof Emoji was rejected, which surprised me as Jollof Rice is eaten by tens of millions of Africans worldwide (if not hundreds of millions). I assumed Jollof rice would be approved, especially since Falafel (my favorite Mediterranean food) would be approved due to its popularity. Sigh.

Side Note: Yes, the Jesus emoji was rejected apparently, but that could be due to these emojis: 🧔🏾‍♀️🧔🏽‍♀️🧔🏻‍♀️

The Pan African flag is still under consideration, which is better than being rejected but does not guarantee its approval. Hopefully, Unicode approves the flag, as there currently is not a general flag representing Africans globally (for what it is worth, the African Union has yet to submit an official request for a flag).

There have been six (6!) coup/coup attempts in five countries within ECOWAS thus far & only two coups were thwarted.

Guinea-Bissau 🇬🇼 & Niger 🇳🇪 were able to repel rebel soldiers/terrorists from taking over their respective governments while Guinea 🇬🇳, Mali 🇲🇱 & Burkina Faso 🇧🇫 fell like old trees in a forest.

The military of Guinea 🇬🇳 took over after President Alpha Conde altered the constitution to allow himself a third term (dude was corrupt).

Meanwhile, the Mali 🇲🇱 military claimed they needed to remove civilian rule to fight against terrorists, which is utterly bogus.

Last but not least, the military of Burkina Faso 🇧🇫 also claimed security reasons for overthrowing their civilian government. Still, they are at least attempting to restore civilian rule to the country.

While I loathe corrupt governments, I equally despise authoritarian ones & hopefully, these countries will return to democratic rule sooner rather than later, lest their populations suffer economically.

So we might have to worry about NeoCoV‽ Another coronavirus that is deadlier than SARS-CoV-2 (commonly referred to as COVID or the coronavirus). It appears in bats 🦇 so maybe we need to monitor bats heavily & make sure people wear protective equipment to avoid getting bit.
